New QUEERSPACE App will create a one-of-a-kind safe space for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and adults

Building Connection in a Disconnected World

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending the Social Connection Conference in Atlanta, hosted by the Foundation for Social Connection and Healthy Places by Design. It was so inspiring to meet and learn from people across the country who are working to build community and connection.

The times we’re living in are incredibly challenging. It almost feels like the more we are connected to the rest of the world, the more disconnected we become from our own communities. It’s an issue affecting everyone from youth to senior citizens, and U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has even declared loneliness a public health epidemic.

When we think about the impact of social isolation on Queer and Trans youth, we know that it’s nothing new, especially for those living in rural or unsupportive environments. For so many young people, being Queer or Trans is not something they can talk about openly or authentically with the people around them. Many aren’t out to their families, and others don’t have access—or can’t safely access—the spaces where other Queer and Trans people gather.

I think about the number of youth we meet who say they’re the only Queer person in their school. The only Trans student. Or at least, the only one they know of. That kind of isolation takes a toll.

Why We’re Building the QUEERSPACE App

At QUEERSPACE collective, we know that connection saves lives. Research from Hopelab confirms what we’ve seen firsthand: loneliness among young people is reaching crisis levels, and it’s even more severe for those with 2SLGBTQIA+ identities.

So, we decided to do something about it.

We’re building the QUEERSPACE App for iOS, Android, and web browsers—a secure, affirming, and well-structured digital space where youth, caregivers, and community members can connect to vital support, mentorship, and resources. Set to launch in 2026, the App will be first rolled out to current participants of QUEERSPACE programming in the Twin Cities and St. Cloud service areas, followed by expansion across Minnesota, the Midwest, and the U.S.—extending culturally responsive connection to youth wherever they are.

While many young people are already finding connection online, we know that those spaces weren’t necessarily built for them, and that can come with risks. Our app is being designed intentionally for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth: a space made by and for our community, where they can feel safe and supported.

What the App Will Do

We already understand the incredible impact of mentorship for Queer and Trans youth. But we also know that so many young people across Minnesota can’t access our in-person programs because they live in rural areas or don’t have parental support to connect face-to-face with a mentor.

This app changes that.

Through the QUEERSPACE App, youth will be able to connect with trained and background-checked mentors—adults who understand what they’re going through and can offer guidance, support, and a listening ear.

Beyond mentorship, the app will also connect youth, parents, and community members with affirming resources in their area, from local 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations to Queer- and Trans-owned coffee shops, restaurants, stores, and safer spaces. In places where direct 2SLGBTQIA+ resources are limited, we want this app to help people find community in whatever ways are available.

And because caregivers also need support, the app will offer spaces for parents and guardians to connect with one another. We know that many caregivers deeply love and support their Queer and Trans youth, but they too can feel isolated and unsure of where to turn. The app will give them a way to build community, learn, and grow together.

Finally, the app will also serve as a one-stop shop for QUEERSPACE programming, a place where youth can register for events, sign up for workshops, and see what’s happening at the QS Youth Center.

And accessibility is key. We’re designing the app to be available both on mobile devices and through a web browser, for youth who don’t have phones or who don’t feel comfortable downloading an app like this. If you have internet access, you’ll be able to connect.

Built with Community, for Community

We’ve been working closely with youth, caregivers, mentors, and industry experts to make sure this app reflects the real needs and experiences of the people it’s meant to serve. From safety and privacy features to inclusive design and language accessibility, every element is being created with intention.

The QUEERSPACE App is more than just technology, it’s a commitment to making sure every Queer and Trans young person knows they belong, no matter where they are.

If you believe in that vision too, we invite you to join us. You can support this project by donating, signing up for updates, or sharing this story with others who care about building a more connected, affirming world for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth.
